The heart is a dark territory, a forest your mother told you not to enter. But inevitably, we’ll always set foot on these forbidden paths to the center of the thicket. And there, under the tallest trees, a band called My Heart Belongs To Cecilia Winter has installed their gear.
Over the past two years, the Zurich-based Trio gained the reputation of an irresistible live band and stepped up from being a local phenomenon to an international insider’s tip. The concerts of Betty Fischer, Thom Luz and Kusi Gerber are romantic declarations of war, with over-reverbed guitars, distorted bass, staggering drums and hymnical, multi-layered vocals; they sound just as melodic as Roxette and just as fuzzy and droning as The Jesus & Mary Chain.

In 2010, the band released their debut album in Switzerland and Germany and gained a lot of media attention:
“Our Love Will Cut Through Everything has the same implicitness as the debuts of Interpol or Death Cab for Cutie", claimed the Süddeutsche Zeitung. Die Zeit added: “This is the best album for autumn in 2010”, and the German Music magazine VISIONS featured the song Lights Out on the sampler of their November issue. Subsequently, the band played more than one hundred shows in Switzerland, Germany, France and Austria, including the Festivals Popkomm Berlin, Reeperbahn Hamburg, Paléo Festival Nyon, Gurten Festival Bern, Printemps de Bourges and Mama Paris.

What does one do when you turn from secret local indie newcomer to being the next big thing overnight? “Take a deep breath, tie your shoelaces and get on that stage!”, says Gerber, and Betty Fischer adds: “Stay humble and keep on working. Don’t believe the hype. “We’re trying not to look left or right and only look inward”, adds Thom Luz.
The band has been working with producer Philippe Laffer on their second album since the autumn of 2011. As of yet, there is no information concerning the title or the general artistic approach. MHBTCW are just as much known for their penchant for secrecy as for their eccentric appearances with glitter guns and extroverted clothing. For now, only these things are certain: the record will come out in September 2012 – and the band has bought two celestas and five additional reverb pedals.
